> Highly precise dosing of small amounts of API
> From laboratory to production without scale-up
> Integrated process, quality control and traceability
In continuous manufacturing, what usually would be separate process steps of batch production are integrated together into an automated single compact unit. Each part operating continuously and sequentially without interruption.
In May this year, Bosch launched its Xelum platform for continuous production of oral solid dosage (OSD) forms at Interpack in Dusseldorf, Germany. The platform combines dosing, mixing, granulating and tableting in a continuous process. Bosch put its process expertise and know-how at the front of the development to create the Xelum platform, utilizing a number of proven processes, which are already standard in the industry today. The basis of Xelum is Bosch’s innovative granulation technology from Bosch Huettlin combined with industry leading compression technology from Bosch Waiblingen. This allows for a complete single source solution, which is both future-proof and user friendly.
Continuous manufacturing is built on a number of requirements driven by the pharmaceutical industry: quality, efficiency, flexibility and speed to market. Bosch fulfilled all of these requirements with Xelum. This includes shorter development times with less API consumption; a faster and easier transfer from development to production, without the need for scale-up, which is supported with automated DoE functions; and more flexible batch sizes, with precise dosing down to even the smallest amounts of API. Quality assurance is integrated into the process with the use of intelligent sensors. All ongoing processes can be recorded inline, allowing for control of the quality characteristics throughout any stage of production. To further enhance quality control, all ingredients can be easily traced back through the system thanks to the controlled product flow.
